Terms of Use

Effective date: May 18, 2026

Welcome to Floodlight. These Terms of Use (the "Terms") govern your use of our website. Floodlight Inc ("Floodlight," "we," "us," or "our") is an independent nonprofit investigative newsroom with a focus on climate. By visiting or using our site, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

We've tried to write these Terms in plain language. Your use of Floodlight is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your information.

Using our site

You're welcome to read, link to, and share Floodlight's journalism. In using the site, you agree to:

  • Use it only for lawful purposes
  • Not attempt to disrupt, hack, or interfere with the site or its security
  • Not use automated tools (bots, scrapers, crawlers) to harvest content or data without our permission
  • Not impersonate Floodlight or misrepresent your affiliation with us

Our content

Floodlight is a nonprofit newsroom, and we believe our journalism should reach as many readers as possible. Unless otherwise noted, our original stories are made available for free republication under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. In plain terms: you're welcome to republish our work. We ask for a few additional things specific to our newsroom — full details are in our republication terms.

Photos, video, and graphics. Images and video that ran with a Floodlight story may be republished alongside that story under the same terms. Standalone use of our photos, video, or graphics — separate from the story they originally accompanied — is handled case by case. For those requests, email us at contact@floodlightnews.org.

Content you share with us

If you send us a tip, story idea, letter, comment, or other feedback, you're giving Floodlight permission to use it in our reporting and on our platforms. Before using any information you submit in our reporting,  we’ll review it, verify it, and make reasonable attempts to contact you. If you want to share information confidentially or as a source, please email us at contact@floodlightnews.org.

Our site may include links to other websites. We provide these for convenience and context, but we don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content, accuracy, or privacy practices. When you leave Floodlight, the destination site's terms and privacy policy apply.

You're welcome to link to Floodlight from your own site, as long as the link doesn't suggest a false affiliation or cast Floodlight in a misleading light. Please don't frame our content inside another site.

We take reasonable steps to keep the site secure, but we can't guarantee it will always be free of viruses, errors, or interruptions. We're not responsible for any damage that results from using the site or downloading material from it.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Floodlight News and its staff, contributors, board members, and partners are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the site, including damages from errors, omissions, interruptions, or your reliance on any content.
